"Two Cents and a Milk Bottle"
Twelve-year-old Leely Dorman is determined to succeed. Whether it is riding a bicycle, playing a piano, earning some money or becoming a Bat Mitzvah, Leely is going to make it happen, no matter what gets in her way!
Two Cents and a Milk Bottle is the story of Leely Dorman, her fifteen-year-old sister Evy, and Arnie, her seven-year-old brother. The year is 1937, one of the worst years of the Depression. Leely and her family live in Brooklyn, New York.
Leely is nervous when her family moves to another new neighborhood. But fear turns to surprise when she meets the children who live there. There is Philly Bronson, the boy with the bluest eyes Leely has ever seen. Francy Piccolo, her new best friend. Adeline, Frankie, Irene and Millie, who lives across the hall.
Immediately, things begin to happen for Leely. Philly gives Leely her first riding lesson on his brand-new bicycle. But, when Leely crashes and breaks his taillight, her very first experience with her new friends turns into a real disaster.
Leely promises to repair the taillight, but even as she earns money by working for her father and the grocer, all the money she earned mysteriously disappeared.
Follow along with Leely on her adventures as she does whatever she can for extra money, while making special friends, discovering boys, and learning about herself...
"Dear Grandma,
Thank you for the book. It is really interesting---it is really irresistible.
I'm at the good part. Did you read the book before you gave it to me?
If you didn't, you missed a lot."
